Our partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was developed several years ago to center the conversation around disability inclusion. Since then, we have deepened our work around mental health through several initiatives that champion new perspectives on filmmaking and film history as well as an accessible and equitable experience for audiences of all backgrounds. Together we have expanded the program to ensure that aspiring young filmmakers with disabilities and from other diverse communities are afforded opportunities in the entertainment industry, and sponsored an annual panel for industry members to discuss mental health.

The Digital Wellness Lab of Boston Children’s Hospital conducted a survey with 1,500 teens and examined differences in gaming practices and experiences among age and gender.  This research will help to guide the Foundation’s further investments into this sector.

The Foundation has partnered with BaMidbar to bring its unique mental health approach and adventure-based clinical therapy to Jewish teenagers and young adults in the Boston area. Through a grant, BaMidbar also will partner with Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JF&CS), with the Boston expansion piloting a new model for the two organizations.

Given BaMidbar’s goal to fortify the microsystem of support and JF&CS’s focus on parents and caregivers, the two organizations are partnering to provide services for a combined wider range of the population.

Following the Foundation’s initial investments into the national scaling of the Brookline Center for Community Mental Health’s innovative BRYT program, this proven school initiative is attracting substantial additional investments from public and private donors to fuel the continued expansion.  The program is now available to 140 schools on the East Coast, and in a year will be accessible to all 260,000 public school students in Massachusetts.    

BRYT has been shown to increase graduation rates for students struggling with mental health challenges while stabilizing students at risk of developing serious mental health conditions. A multi-year evaluation published in Psychology in the Schools in 2017 showed that students in BRYT programs made clinical progress and improved their day-to-day functioning.

The Ruderman Family Foundation has partnered with Lenny Learning, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing mental and behavioral health support in schools through an AI-powered platform. Lenny Learning’s mission is to empower educators and counselors with tools to expand capacity and address students’ mental health needs.

The platform offers tools for student assessments and personalized lesson plans, leveraging advanced AI models and clinically-vetted content. This enables teachers and counselors to create tailored interventions ranging from comprehensive social-emotional learning curricula to targeted support for individual students. The grant will allow them to expand services throughout Massachusetts, where they expect to be in 30+ new schools and reach over 20,000 students.

In partnership with WJC, the Foundation has established the Ruderman Fellows program designed to increase the knowledge and skills of non-clinical campus staff who are encountering student mental health challenges in their classrooms and elsewhere on campus. This innovative pilot draws on the college’s expertise in professional development training and credentialing programs for higher education and the community at large.  Workforce development has emerged as a top priority for improving mental health care so this program responds to the pressing need that many faculty have voiced about their need to better understand the health and wellbeing of their students. This initiative trains higher education professionals and administrators from across New England.

The Ruderman Family Foundation and Red Sox Foundation have partnered for the past three years to focus on improving mental health outcomes in communities across New England. The centerpiece of this partnership is the annual IMPACT Awards, which provides grant funding to mental-health-focused nonprofits in all six New England states. Since the start of this partnership in 2020, $270,000 have been distributed throughout the communities we serve.

In 2022, in an effort to foster open discussion surrounding mental health in sports, the two foundations hosted a panel discussion at Fenway Park featuring Red Sox Director of Behavioral Health Dr. Richard Ginsburg, Assistant Director of Psychology Training for the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital Dr. Jonathan Jenkins, and Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders. The Ruderman Foundation is supporting the Rare Impact Fund to raise dollars in partnership with like-minded businesses and philanthropy to 1) change the culture of giving, 2) destigmatize mental health, and 3) financially support and amplify the mission and vision of mental health organizations serving young people. In 2023, the Rare Impact Fund will launch two global campaigns in the months of May and October; announce a new cohort of grantees in April and December, and create mental health content, disseminating resources relevant to our audiences throughout the calendar year.

Teachers in 25 schools across the state are being trained in the theory, materials, and delivery of the program.  The curriculum aligns with the state’s current CASEL framework and is centered around equity, inclusion, generosity, and using creative expression to express and manage difficult feelings.

The Ruderman Family Foundation has a longstanding partnership with CJP, towards the Ruderman Synagogue Inclusion Project (RSIP). This initiative has inspired synagogues and prayer communities to create spaces and experiences that are more inclusive of people of all abilities.

Currently, 54 institutions, representing all denominations, are actively involved in RSIP. As RSIP partners, they have access to a variety of resources, including local and national experts who provide guidance and consultations, opportunities for congregational communities to teach, network, and share best practices, and inclusion support for those with mental health challenges.

Through its transformational work around inclusion, RSIP continues to address divisions in society, uniting our community and rabbis and synagogues of all denominations around shared values in Jewish life. RSIP events are the one place where rabbis from ultra-orthodox yeshivas and synagogues sit in a room with rabbinical colleagues of all genders and denominations to study and tackle the issues of inclusion in our Jewish community.

The Ruderman Foundation is in partnership with the BU Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation to develop The Leave of Absence Manual. This will guide students who have had an interruption to their postsecondary education or are considering a leave of absence in making informed decisions about taking a leave, managing and building their collegiate resilience during a leave, and handling the process of re-entry effectively and healthily. The Manual will offer tools and strategies to navigate what can be a daunting process, as well as inspirational student vignettes to support and empower students with the wisdom of peers with shared experiences. The associated Implementation Toolkit will assist colleges and universities across Massachusetts with putting in place best practices and policies related to student leave of absence and provide a framework for future policy changes in college mental health on a broader level. www.cpr.bu.edu
